Ever wonder how your professor writes mathematical symbols, equations, and formulas so easily for your assignments? Ever been frustrated with the limitations and clumsiness of Microsoft's Equation Editor when writing your lab assignments? Is the technical and aesthetic formatting of your senior thesis driving you crazy? The solution to all these problems is to learn LaTeX, a document preparation system that makes writing mathematics simple and creates consistent formatting.

In this workshop, we will step through the set-up of getting started with Overleaf to compile your first document. The first half of the workshop will go through the basics of LaTeX and writing math equations so you can start turning in clear solutions to your homework assignments online. The second half delves into formatting and referencing sections, displaying figures, using packages, and citing sources, enough to produce a professional senior thesis or publishable manuscript.

Pre-requisites

There is no prior experience needed to attend this workshop.

Join Scott Kosch ’93 P'26 '28—investor, entrepreneur, AI advisor, RLCIE board member, and author of the new book Indispensable: A Student’s Guide for Thriving in the Age of AI—for a candid and practical look at what the AI revolution means for you right now. Scott will explore why the traditional college-to-career playbook is changing, which skills will become more valuable as AI becomes more powerful, and how to use AI as a launchpad for your own abilities rather than a substitute for them.

You’ll leave with a different way to think about your remaining time at Claremont: how to develop judgment, originality, adaptability and human skills; why “proof of work” may increasingly matter alongside your résumé and GPA; and how one student with an idea, a laptop and today’s AI tools can accomplish things that once required an entire team. Thanks to massive data availability these days, GIS has become one of the most important tools for data-driven decision making. I am excited to invite you to join me and other CMC alumni, parents, students, and friends for a visit to Baja California: Among the Great Whales.
In conjunction with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, a small band of intrepid Claremont travelers will journey from March 13 to 20, 2027 through the Gulf of California aboard the National Geographic Venture. Our itinerary includes hikes, Zodiac cruises, and snorkeling, along with delightful cuisine and hearty CMC camaraderie. A highlight, of course, will be the search for dolphins, sea lions, and up to six species of whales. Families are welcome: thanks to a special National Geographic Explorers-in-Training family program, children and teens will learn about this wild corner of the world—from tiny hummingbirds to massive humpback whales.
As a biological scientist, I have spent my career teaching students and
studying whales and their prehistoric ancestors. The Gulf of California is the perfect laboratory to continue these studies and share them with you. Seeing whales, sea lions, dolphins, sea birds, and other wildlife in their natural habitat while learning about the beauty of Baja California will be the opportunity of a lifetime.
