We’re excited to invite you to a quick and insightful bite-size sessions on Power Query & Power BI! In these sessions the content is designed to help you harness the power of these tools to streamline data processing and create dynamic, interactive reports. Whether you're a beginner looking to understand the basics or an experienced user wanting to refine your skills, this workshop will provide practical, hands-on insights to make data transformation and visualization easier and more efficient.

You'll learn how to:
Use Power Query to clean, reshape, and automate data preparation.
Leverage Power BI to build interactive dashboards and meaningful reports.
Enhance efficiency by connecting multiple data sources and applying advanced transformations.

Pre-requisites

Internet Use: Introductory level (search, log-in, navigation of websites, etc.)
Local installation (if you bring your laptop): Microsoft Excel (any version)
Software knowledge: basic Excel skills

  • Opening a table in Power Query (Mac users: enable Power Query in settings)
  • Navigating the Power Query environment
  • Applying simple filters
  • Splitting date and time columns

April 11 – Data Transformation in Power Query (Instructor: Dr. Vanessa Casillas)

  • Understanding data types and column formats
  • Using "Use First Row as Header"
  • Replacing values and filtering data
  • Streamlining the data transformation process

April 18 – Introduction to Power BI (Instructor: Dr. Cynthia Cheng)

  • Connecting to an Excel data file
  • Integrating Power Query with Power BI
  • Exploring the Power BI interface and key features

April 25 – Power BI Reports & Dashboards (Instructor: Dr. Cynthia Cheng)

  • Step-by-step process for creating reports and dashboards

May 9 – Building Power BI Dashboards (Instructor: Dr. Cynthia Cheng)

  • Hands-on session: designing and building interactive dashboards and reports
